Do It Yourself Stock: Part 1

Using a PVC stock I was able to reduce my 10 meter group by 18%. It was an easy stock to build from schedule 40 PVC tube and fittings for less than $5.00. Building the stock adapter was the most complicated part of the process and will be presented here first in Part 1.

It all starts with a common 1/2 inch threaded connector. The threads are taken down with a common file until the end can be inserted into the back of the receiver tube. This will eventually replace the metal receiver end cap.

If you mark the thread section at about 3/8 inch you can see if that will be enough length to pass the screw hole and not contact the hammer when cocking. Note the overhand of the plastic action beyond the receiver tube end.

In this photo you can see where the connector body has been notched for the action. The end has also been cut short and the holes have been marked and drilled for the screws.

I was lucky enough to find a coin that press fit into the connector that will act as the mainspring stop when the stock tube is installed. If the hole is left open the mainspring will just pass right through.

A short piece of 1/2 OD vinyl tube is pushed into the connector to act as a thread lock to hold the screws in place. This somewhat eliminates the need to tap the holes, but I did drill and tap both the PVC and the vinyl. If you experiment using small to larger drill bits you can find one that will allow you to force threads into the PVC with an 8-32 screw without using a tap.

In Part 2 we will see a couple of different way to build the stocks themselves.

Shoot Smart. Shoot Safely.
